Learn about Rolfing

If you had an ice skating injury 20 years ago why does your body need to be reminded of that every time you climb a flight of stairs?”

There are a few things about Rolfing that amaze me

Firstly one of the most bizarrely amazing things is how few people have heard of it. The second thing that amazes me every day that I work with this beautifully intuitive techique is just how much it can do on so many different levels.

“After one session I felt like I could fly. After the entire 10 series I had undergone a profound shift, physically, mentally and emotionally. Working in partnership with Liesl over three years has guided me to a far more grounded, connected, pain free, aware and integrated life on so many levels.”

Sometimes I hear myself saying “Rolfing finds you where you need it” – almost as though it has a homing device to find the places that need to be worked on to release.

Rolfing supports your body’s quest to be free

Release is quite a buzz word these days. We are all looking to release something. To let go of something that’s holding us back. Whether it’s an old injury that never really healed, an early breathing pattern that doesn’t belong to us any more or an out of date belief or body image that we’ve outgrown.

We search for freedom in its many guises. To be free from the parts of ourselves that no longer represent who we really are today. I think it’s a bit like this for the body, it too wants to change and grow and evolve. But that can be difficult if it’s stuck.

“This was such a powerful experience for me. I had contacted Liesl after experiencing a lot of back and shoulder pain from being so tall. What I got was a lot more. I notice so much more. I’ve found a much greater access to ease and flow not only physically, but also emotionally. This really has had such a huge impact on my life!”

Of course, the experiences we’ve been through will all leave their mark, whether in our connective tissue system, in our hearts, our perception or even in our relationship to our world. But what we want is for your body to be able to move on and repair and feel free.

That’s what we’re working towards, together.

Where did Rolfing come from?

When we use the word “structure” we are referring to the relationships in three dimensional space. There’s nothing metaphysical about it; it’s pure physics, the kind taught in physics laboratories. This organ of structure is a very resilient, elastic, plastic medium. It can be changed. It can be changed by adding energy. In Rolfing, one of the ways we add energy is by pressure. The practitioner deliberately contributes energy to the person he is working with. This is not energy in the sense in which metaphysicians throw the word around. This is energy as they talk about in the physics laboratory. When you press on a given point you literally are adding energy to structures under that point.”Ida Rolf, Founder of Rolfing

Blueprint of a Typical Session

The thing about Rolfing is that there are no typical sessions. We have the recipe that is the legacy handed down to us by Ida Rolf. And most Rolfers will work and play within and without the recipe – it guides our work and gives the sessions a structure.

One of the things about Rolfing is it’s unpredictable. We don’t know where the session will lead us or really how your body will react. Each person is different and what each body will need will therefore be unique.

I could say that with the first session we’ll work with freeing the breath and traditionally we’d do that by working on the breathing muscles. But if the reason you can’t effortlessly breathe is due to the fact that your body can’t rest into the ground then it might only be until we work with the feet that we really free the breath but the session’s are individually tailored to you and your body and what you need.

I enjoy the fact that it’s unpredictable because it feels more representative of life itself. But of course embarking on a treatment process and being told that it’s unpredictable in its results and affects might not be exactly what you want to hear. Well that’s why I’m here. You won’t be alone on the journey. It is of course your process but I will be here to support you and help you understand what’s happening within your body.

Rolfing is a wonderfully educational adventure

If you want to learn about yourself and why you are the way you are then you just might have found a very inspiring way to begin.

“After each session I can feel myself coming back to centre – as if my body is returning to its original state of balance and equilibrium. I highly recommend the 10 session programme as a way to gain strength, balance and remove points of tightness and constriction in the flow of energy in the body. A very powerful and nourishing experience.”
